Known Trivia

  • Production was delayed when a freak snowstorm hit the set in Cambridge, Ontario on 23 March 2011.

  • Roger Avary was originally set to write the film and had actually begun writing a draft when he was sent to jail for gross vehicular manslaughter and two felony counts of causing bodily injury while intoxicated. The film was then delayed until the studio hired Michael J. Bassett in Fall 2010 to write and direct.

  • In the school corridor in the trailer, just after heather bumps into Vincent on the wall behind them is a poster for a graphics class with a picture if a girl with a butterfly/moth over her face. Moths/butterflies were used a lot as imagery in the games and represent Sharon’s “change” into Heather.

Plot: When her father disappears, Heather Mason is drawn into a strange and terrifying alternate reality that holds answers to the horrific nightmares that have plagued her since childhood. Full summary » |  »

Known Trivia

  • In 2005, while on the London set of ‘V for Vendetta’, the actress Natalie Portman gave a copy the original novel to Lana Wachowski, who became deeply interested with it. A year later, both Wachowski siblings wrote a first draft. Tom Tykwer, a friend of the Wachowskis, was invited to co-author with them several subsequent drafts in the following two years, constantly taking in mind observations by the book’s author himself, David Mitchell, while looking for international investors. In all those years, Portman was promised the role as Sonmi-451, but had to turn down the role in the last minute after becoming pregnant in 2010.

  • James McAvoy was considered for a role.

  • Ian McKellen was considered for a role.

  • All cast members have several roles in the final film, spanning different times, races and even sexes. This was achieved through prosthetics, wardrobe and tight production times to switch actors between units. For instance, Halle Berry described the experience of filming as a Jewish woman in the 1930s under the direction of Tom Tykwer one day, then switching to an old tribal woman under the helm of the Wachowski siblings, and then again as a environmentalist in the 1970s, all in the same week.

  • The whole film was shot with two parallel filming units, one under the helm of Tom Tykwer and the other under the direction of the Wachowski siblings, sharing no crew members beside the cast and the directors themselves.

  • While on the set of this movie, Tom Hanks started calling the Wachowski siblings “Mom and Dad” because they worked so well together and as leaders of the cast and crew.

  • One of the few films in history that has three directors working together as an original team who equally share directing credit.

Plot: An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution. Full summary »  »

{tab=Synopsis}

Synopsis: This film follows the stories of six characters across time, and the stories are told within each other like Russian dolls. It is about how the character’s lives are connected with and influence each other.

The first storyline follows a lawyer named Adam Ewing (Jim Sturgess) in the 1800′s, who is slowly dying on a ship voyage across the Pacific to California. He saves a Moriori (native New Zealand) man named Autua (David Gyasi) on the way, but realizes he is being poisoned by Dr. Henry Goose (Tom Hanks). Autua saves his life and his views of the natives are changed.

The second storyline follows the story of a composer in the 1930′s named Robert Frobisher (Ben Whishaw) who helps the aging composer Vyvyan Ayrs (Jim Broadbent) create his works. Robert enters a sexual relationship with Ayrs’s wife and falls in love with his daughter, tearing him and Ayrs apart. While composing his final peice, the Cloud Atlas sextet, he runs away, then realizes the girl he loves does not love him back, as he thought she did. He finishes the sextet, sends it to his friend Rufus Sixmith (James D’Arcy) and commits suicide.

The third storyline is about a journalist in the late 1900′s named Luisa Rey (Halle Berry). She meets Rufus Sixmith, who is now a physicist, and becomes aware that a power company is attempting to activate an unstable nuclear generator. She investigates this, and discovers that a report on the reactor written by Sixmith can reveal the secret. A scientist named Isaac Sachs (Tom Hanks) meets Rey and helps her. The CEO, Alberto Grimaldi (Hugh Grant) sends his head of security, Joe Napier (Keith David) and his agent, Bill Smoke (Hugo Weaving) to stop her. Smoke kills Sixmith and attempts to kill Rey as she searches for the Sixmith Report. Isaac Sachs realizes he has fallen in love with Rey, and is then instantly killed, with Grimaldi, in a plane explosion triggered by Smoke. Smoke is stopped in the end by Joe Napier. Smoke and Napier kill each other and Luisa Rey initiates the shutdown of the reactor after reporting on the Sixmith Report.

The fourth storyline is about Timothy Cavendish (Jim Broadbent), the owner of a publishing company, who is forced by criminals to pay $500,000. When he is trying to make the money, he becomes trapped in a nursing home for the elderly, thinking it is a hotel. Every attempt to get out is stopped by Nurse Noakes (Hugo Weaving), but he eventually creates an escape plan which he asks two other young residents to help him carry out, and they manage to escape. When he returns, he manages to take the reigns of his company left by the criminals and releases a bestselling book.

The fifth storyline is about Somni-451 (Donna Bae), a clone bred for work in a Papa’s Song fast-food restaurant in Korea (now called Nea So Copros) in the far future. She eventually Ascends, meaning her unintelligent clone mind becomes more advanced, and escapes from the restaurant to take classes an a college. she studies the world and meets a man named Hae-Joo Im (Jim Sturgess), and goes out around the city with him. while watching a movie, Hae-Joo reveals he is actually a revolutionary against the opressive government who wishes to ascend and recruit all the clones in Nea So Copros, and takes Somni-451 to a ship where they are massacring clones and cutting them up for resources. Horrified, she releases a daring memoir speaking out for the clones and is arrested by the government. Awaiting her trial, she realizes her entire life has been fabricated, and everybody, even Hae-Joo Im have been actors working for the government, to create a reaction from the public, that failed and went against the government. As her final act, she finishes the movie she began watching with Hae-Joo Im.

The sixth and final storyline is about Zachry (Tom Hanks) who is a tribesman living in post-apocalyptic Hawaii. After a member of a far mor advanced group of people called the Prescincts, named Meronym (Halle Berry) asks to life with their tribe and he takes her in, their relationship grows. Eventually, while climbing a mountain, Zachry is tempted by the tribe’s personification of death, Old Georgie (Hugo Weaving) to kill Meronym, but refuses. As what he believes is a result, a vicious clan called the Kona overrun his tribe, killing or enslaving everyone, including his family. He manages to escape Big Island with Meronym, who reveals there is a plague threatening to wipe out civilization forever, but he and Meronym manage to survive and live for a long time.

Note the stories are not told in this order, the first half of the first one play, then the first half of the second, etc., then the sixth plays all the way through and the second halves of all the stories are told, in the opposite order (hence the Russian dolls reference).

This synopsis is based on the book, the film may be different.
